The study, Gastrointestinal Interoception and Relapse in Anorexia Nervosa, examined how the brain processes signals from the gut in individuals recovering from anorexia nervosa. Using an ingestible vibrating capsule and computational modeling, researchers found that differences in gut-brain communication persisted after weight restoration and were associated with relapse risk six months later.
Conducted at LIBR between 2021 and 2025, the study included investigators from LIBR and the Laureate Eating Disorders Program. Former LIBR investigator and current affiliated investigator Dr. Sahib Khalsa served as senior author. The findings highlight the potential for developing objective biomarkers to help identify patients at greater risk of relapse and guide more personalized treatment approaches.
