Two weeks ago, LIBR welcomed the Tulsa community to our first Open House event. We greatly enjoyed meeting everyone who visited us to learn more about the ongoing research at LIBR, meet the scientists and participate in an interactive guided tour of the facilities. Our keynote speakers, Drs. Martin Paulus, Jerzy Bodurka and Justin Feinstein shared presentations about their research work. If you were unable to attend the event or one of the lectures, we've shared them here for you to enjoy. Thank you to everyone who participated in the event and for your continued support of our mission to improve the lives of those living with mental illness. This week we'll be sharing highlights on our LIBR Facebook page from the work of LIBR researchers presenting posters and talks at the annual Society for Neuroscience (SFN) conference in Washington, D.C. SFN is the largest neuroscience conference in the world, with more than 30,000 attendees from 80 countries. Abstracts from the work of our investigators may be viewed by clicking on the presentation titles below: During the month of November, LIBR has welcomed several visiting scholars to our Institute.
11-07-2014 Dr. Paul Davenport, Distinguished Professor at the University of Florida, will be visiting the Laureate Institute for Brain Research from 11/6-11/9. His research focuses on the control of breathing, including basic brain mechanisms, reflex-to-cognitive respiratory neurophysiology, pulmonary function assessments and rehabilitation of respiratory muscles. He will present a talk at LIBR entitled "Sensing the Need to Breathe" on Friday afternoon. 11-12-2014 Dr. Thomas Fine, from the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toledo will present at the LIBR journal club series at 12 noon. Dr. Fine was one of the seminal float researchers in the 1980's. He published a number of studies documenting the physiological effects of floating, including significant reductions in blood pressure in patients with chronic hypertension, as well as large reductions in blood cortisol and increases in EEG theta during the float experience. 11-13-2014 Dr. Irene Perini from the University of Gothenburg, Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, in Vaestra Goetaland, Sweden will be visiting the Laureate Institute for Brain Research from 11/11- 11/14. She will give a presentation entitled "Human Nerve Growth Factor Mutation Alters Neural Pathways for Behavioral Responses to Acute Pain" on Wednesday at 1pm. Please join us as we open our Institute to the Tulsa community on November 12th from 4-7 p.m. If you would like to attend, please RSVP online at www.laureateinstitute.org/open-house or e-mail Meg at mperdue@laureateinstitute.org On October 11th, John-Kelly Warren, CEO of The William K. Warren Foundation, successfully completed the IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. His fundraising efforts for the event helped contribute $30,000 to mental health research at the Laureate Institute for Brain Research. Congratulations to John-Kelly for his amazing achievement in the triathlon. We are very grateful for his continued dedication to LIBR and the mental health community of Tulsa!
